HOW TO TELL WHEN YOUR CLUSTER IS STARTING TO FAIL

CLUSTER PROBLEMS

When a vehicle is having trouble starting or does not start at all, this could be due to the failure of the dashboard instrument cluster. It is a very common failure and easily repairable.

CLUSTER FAILURE SYPMTOMS

Cluster failures tend to cause an intermittent failure of lights and gauges on the dash of the car

The dashboard instrument cluster faults will begin intermittently but will always worsen if left. The faults we often see are a loss of the gauges, and backlights dimming or failing completely. Other symptoms include the engine cutting out, flashing of the entire cluster, the mileage can disappear and be replaced by a line of dashes ‘——‘ or the cluster can fail altogether.

OTHER COMMON FAILURES

  • Loss of all instrument cluster functions and lights
  • Speedometer, temperature and rev counter drops to zero
  • Engine cuts out while driving
  • Non start
  • Immobiliser light flashes
  • Mileage shows dashes
  • Erratic gauges
  • Pixilated screen

THE CLUSTER

The electronics in today’s modern cars are so dependent on each other that one single failing component can cause problems. When the cluster does not function, the car might not respond to the accelerator or in the future not even start anymore.  Most dealerships will tend to swap the cluster for a new part, however this will then require the car to be re-coded and extra costs incurred.
